The writings at Streetsblog Chicago, Steven Vance and John Greenfield praise the city of Chicago’s recent move to eliminate parking minimums near train stations and bus lines.

The new rules amend the city’s 2022 connected community ordinance to eliminate the deficit and create a building without parking “to the right” without parking. “Development of locations stored in all transport except for the “D” (Downtown) zoning district can provide zero parking without obtaining “management coordination.”

If the Metra Station is the only transportation service nearby, adjustments are required. The ordinance will expand parking relief to more areas. This includes many zones for detached houses and small multi-family developments. Owners can add new units to their existing homes without adding parking (zoning permission).

The author expresses optimism that the change will reduce developer costs and encourage more light and car-free buildings near transport. “That means fewer driving on Chicago streets, fewer car accidents, less crowded and less pollution.
