The AI ​​agent authority gap – from non-governance to delegation

As we discussed in a previous article, AI agents are exposing structural gaps in enterprise security, but the problem is often viewed very narrowly.

The problem is not simply that agents are new subjects. That means agents are delegated actors. They do not emerge with independent authority. They are triggered, launched, provisioned, or authorized by existing enterprise identities (human users, machine identities, bots, service accounts, and other non-human actors).

As such, Agent-AI is fundamentally different from humans and software, yet remains inseparable from both.

This is why the AI ​​agent authority gap is actually a delegation gap. Enterprises seek to manage emerging actors without first managing the identities to which they delegate authority.

Traditional IAM was built to answer the narrower question of who has access. But once AI agents are deployed, the real question is: what authority is being delegated, by whom, on what terms, for what purposes, and to what extent?

First things first: Manage the delegation chain before the agent AI

The important point is the ordering. Enterprises cannot securely manage Agent-AI without first managing the traditional actors who act as delegators whenever possible.

Human identity and traditional machine identity are already fragmented across applications, APIs, embedded credentials, unmanaged service accounts, and application-specific identity logic. This is the identity of dark matter, which Orchid describes. That is, authorities that exist, operate, and often accumulate risk outside of the scope of managed IAM. If that dark matter remains unobserved, agents will inherit an already broken model of authority. The results are predictable. Agents become effective amplifiers of hidden access, hidden privileges, and hidden execution paths.

First, by reducing identity dark matter across traditional actor estates, it can no longer be delegated or abused for efficiency purposes. This means uncovering the identities of all humans and traditional machines across your application environment, understanding how they are authenticated, where credentials are embedded, how workflows actually execute, and where unmanaged privileges lie. Orchid’s continuous observability model is an essential foundation for secure Agent AI implementations because it establishes a validated baseline of actual identity behavior across managed and unmanaged environments, rather than relying on imperfect static policy assumptions.

From Observability to Authority: Dynamic Governance for Agent AI

Once the traditional actor layer is observed, analyzed, and optimized, its output becomes the input to the real-time Agent-AI Delegation Authority layer. This is where Orchid’s model becomes more powerful than traditional IAM. That telemetry is more than just visibility and insight. This becomes a continuous feed to a permissions engine that evaluates the delegator’s permissions profile, the context of the target application, the intent behind the requested action, and the scope of the execution. In other words, an agent should not be governed solely by its own nominal authority. This must be continually managed by the attitude and intent of the actor delegating authority, as well as the context of what the agent is trying to do.

This creates a more powerful control model. Think about it. Human delegators with weak posture, risky behavior, or excessive covert access should not be given the same Agent-AI privileges as tightly controlled delegators operating in constrained workflows. Similarly, a machine or service account with broad but poorly understood permissions should not be allowed to trigger an agent with unconstrained downstream action potential.

Orchid’s role in this model is to continually evaluate the delegator, the delegated actor, and the application path between them and enforce permissions accordingly. That is what turns observability into governance.

This is also why end states not only enhance individual auditing of human, machine, and agent AI actors. Dynamic sequential delegation control. Orchid can map each agent ID to the applications the agent contacts, the workflows it can invoke, the intent patterns it exhibits, and the range of intended actions. Then, using the live observability feed, you can decide in real time whether to allow that agent to operate, only allow recommendations, limit it to a limited set of tools, or stop it completely. It’s not just about knowing what the agent has access to, it’s about continually deciding what the agent can decide and do at the speed of the machine.

AI agents are more than just a new identity type. These are delegated identity types. That power comes from traditional corporate actors like humans, bots, service accounts, and machine identities. So the question of agent and AI governance doesn’t start with the agent. It starts with the delegate. If enterprises cannot observe and control the identities of the humans and traditional machines that trigger agent actions, they also cannot securely manage agents. Orchid’s model makes that ordering explicit. First, reduce identity dark matter across the traditional actor estate, and then use continuous observation, analysis, and auditing of these delegates as live input to a real-time Agent-AI Delegation Authority layer.
