The great Coventry Food Bancathon marks the beginning of a new partnership to support efforts to tackle food poverty in cities.

Coventry Building Society Arena has announced that it will work together as one of its community partners with Coventry Foodbank to fund and donate food and products to support the charity’s business.

Foodbankathon passed the arena ahead of the match against Middlesboro in Coventry City on Saturday, encouraging fans to donate tin or cash to support the food bank.

With the community’s Coventry Building Society Arena, Coventry City Football Club and Sky Blues joining forces to host a matchday collection, the arena was the seventh stop on the 34km route called at each of the city’s 15 food bank centres.

The food vancathon began at St. Catherine’s Church in Stoke Aldermore and finished at St. Stephen’s Church in Canley, with a record number of people participating that day, with participants choosing to run, walk, skip or cycle around the city.

Tom Davis, head of the supply chain at Coventry Building Society Arena, was one of the participants on the day, raising £450 for donations. He said: “It was a tough job, but it was a really good day to raise awareness and funding at Coventry Food Bank. We started at 9am and after 7pm we increased the 47,500 sq.m. to the end.”

“We’ve been working hard to get the most out of our lives,” said Ian Siddall, Global Relationship Manager at Feed The Hungry.

The cost of living is because hundreds of people need to use food banks in town each week. Over 250,000 people have received food from Foodbank within 14 years of their founding.

Paul Michael, managing director of Coventry Building Society Arena, added:
