After the nightclub tragedy in Santo Domingo, we hope to find survivors when search and rescue operations turn into recovery.

Officials from the Dominican Republic raised the death toll from a catastrophic roof collapse at the Jetset Nightclub in the capital Santo Domingo, hoping survivors will fade and rescue operations will turn into recovery.

Local media cited the country’s emergency business manager Juan Manuel Mendes reported on Thursday that at least 184 people had been killed in the accident. Mendes also emphasized that it was a “preliminary person.”

“We’re not going to throw away any of us until we look into it all,” Mendes said at a press conference.

“We will be here until we recover all those who are dead or alive,” he said, adding that no survivors have been found under the tile rub since Tuesday afternoon.

The legendary club was packed with musicians, professional athletes and government officials as dust began to fall from the ceiling to people’s drinks early on Tuesday. A few minutes later, the roof collapsed.

As rescue operations moved into the recovery phase, more friends and relatives gathered outside the National Institute of Forensic and Pathology of the Dominican Republic await news about the fate of their loved ones.

Authorities were seeking calm on Wednesday as they released the names of 54 identified victims and notified the release of 28 bodies to their families. However, the 33 bodies are still unknown, officials said late Wednesday afternoon, adding that they still don’t have a full tally that all the bodies have been recovered.

An estimated 150 or more people injured in the accident remain hospitalized, including at least eight people in danger, officials said.

“The point they have in their advantage is that they are younger,” said Dr. Julio Landron, director of the Ney Arias Lora Trauma Hospital, where 21 victims are being treated. Five survivors are in serious condition with serious injuries, including a skull, femur and pelvic fracture.

“They spent six, seven, eight hours under the tile rub with multiple fractures, multiple injuries and bleeding related to being crushed,” he said.

It is not yet clear why the ceiling collapsed, and the nightclub issued a statement saying it was working with the authorities.

The Department of Public Works has introduced all questions on the issue to the mayor’s office, but this also does not comment on the situation.
