For some, that rumored choice was too cheesy, too unromantic, too attention-seeking, too public, too obvious, and too much to be easily ridiculed. Some have accused the whole thing of being a stunt, a distraction for paparazzi and fans while the couple flees to their actual wedding location.

But as the Fourth of July weekend approaches, the evidence is becoming harder to ignore.

Before you dismiss this idea as a romantic failure, there’s an actual reason that makes sense for them getting married at Madison Square Garden. Please listen.

A forklift driver was also spotted outside the venue wearing a vintage Taylor Swift Crew T-shirt, apparently from the singer’s 2011 Speak Now Tour performance at MSG.

Security inside the arena appears to be just as tight as outside. According to TMZ, MSG’s event production employees working on the setup have been instructed to leave their cell phones behind while on the job, wear wristbands, and go through an extra layer of security when arriving at work. MSG employees who were not involved in setting up the arena were also affected and had to wait in security lines. Reportedly, no one was told what this event really was.

Even city officials are leaning into the speculation, with New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani joking that there will be a World Cup game, the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, and “Taylor Swift’s wedding” over the weekend, before adding in a heatwave press conference: “If you’re going to get married at MSG, you’re going to stay indoors and stay cool.”

Is this an elaborate decoy?

Some are convinced that MSG was not the actual wedding location, but an expensive misdirect meant to focus paparazzi and fan attention on Midtown while Swift and Kelsey got married elsewhere. Others believe the garden will be a reception rather than a ceremony, with couples exchanging vows in private before moving on to a larger celebration.

This theory is not completely unfounded. Swift, along with her publicist Tree Payne, has proven over the years that she can keep quiet until she’s ready to release her big plans. MSG solves several of these problems at once. The arena is enclosed and built to accommodate large-scale events attended by some of the world’s biggest names, including the President of the United States, who attended the NBA Finals on June 8th. It manages private controlled entrances and access points, backstage corridors, loading docks, multiple security checkpoints, catering infrastructure, and the daily operations of moving arriving VIPs through the building without exposing them to public view. In theory, the whole event could work like Fort Knox with flowers.

MSG also has the stamina to handle the party Swift and Kelce are planning to throw. Venue rental documents for the arena list a capacity of 19,500 people for concerts, 2,000 people for cocktails, and 1,250 people for banquets. A 1,000 person celebration will not expand the venue.

You can also completely rethink your space. Close your eyes and imagine MSG. Once you remove the court, stage, and seating, what you’re left with is 820,000 square feet of blank canvas. According to the report, a large castle is being constructed, with lush gardens surrounding the building and cloth hanging from the ceiling and covered floors. Gardens are becoming literal gardens.
