Simple facts

Name: Dwarf sperm whale (Kogia Shima)

Where it lives: tropical and temperate waters around the world.

What it eats: deep-sea squid, octopus, crustaceans, fish.

The sperm of the star d has an unusual way of protecting itself when attacked. When they feel threatened, these little whales release intestinal fluid and turn the water red.

It is the smallest species of whales, up to 8 feet 10 inches (2.7 meters) long. They are smaller than some dolphins, such as the Risso dolphin (Granpus Griseus), the dolphin that can reach 13 feet (4 meters), and the bottlenorth dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), which grows to about 12 feet (3.8 meters). These animals are very similar to the pygmy sperm whale (Cogia Breviseps), so it is difficult to separate the two. They were even believed to be the same species until 1966.

On the surface, they usually don’t get close to the boat, making studying very difficult. These toothed whales usually have less long lifespans. According to whales and dolphins conservation, they tend to move at a steady pace, and when they are ready to return to the deeper oceans, they drift gently back under the water.

Other whales, except for the pygmy sperm whales, will not use this tactic to escape danger.

“Each star sperm whales have a sac filled with dark liquid within their intestines,” wrote a representative of the National Marine and Atmospheric Administration. “Whales can release more than 3 gallons [11 liters] A dark reddish brown liquid from this sac, or ink. ”

This cloud darkens the water, making it difficult for predators to see, and helps small whales take their vacation.

Their predators include large sharks and orcas (Orcinus orcas), and these pint-sized whales are threatened by entanglement, ship attacks and contamination.

Dwarf sperm whales can live to about 22 years old. Little is known about their social behavior, but they are usually found in small pods of 16 or fewer whales.

They like deep water and can dive to over 1,000 feet (300 meters) to find food. They eat a variety of deep-sea squid, octopus, crabs and fish. Use echolocation to track your prey. They are often found near the continental shelf, where many food sources are accessible.
