Dylan Efron recalled that at the peak of his fitness in life, he was “a little vegan.”

“When I was doing triathlons, I was on a pretty vegan diet,” the Dancing with the Stars season 34 finalist said in a recent interview with WWD. “That’s because I was training about three hours a day and doing a lot of cardio. Eating meat makes it harder to train. That worked for me at the time, but, well, I was skinny.”

A quick trip to the doctor for blood tests revealed how he was overtrained and deficient in some nutrients. So he upped his supplement intake and added whey protein to his daily diet. “I gained about 15 pounds of muscle overnight. It felt incredible,” he recalled.

“Whey protein has kind of turned my health around,” Efron added. “This is a staple for me. I take whey protein after every workout and between breakfast and lunch, even when I’m just hungry. I try to take it every day as much as possible.”

Given his investment in high-quality milk-based protein, Efron is working with Garden of Life to launch a new clear whey protein that is expected to hit retail stores this September. Available in three flavor profiles: Unflavored, Mango Mist, and Lemon Frost, this dissolvable powder can be mixed into water, smoothies, or shakes to deliver 20 grams of whey protein isolate.

As part of the partnership, the former “Traitors” star will be attending the Aspen Food & Wine Classic this June to give consumers an early taste of Garden of Life’s latest products. “Nutrition, fitness and travel are three of my biggest passions, and they all collide in this regard,” he noted.

Efron, who finished fourth on “Dancing with the Stars” last fall, said he was happy with his performance. “If I wasn’t in such good cardio shape or didn’t go to the gym as much, I would have had to lose weight first and foremost,” he said. “So I’ve been training almost every day since I was a kid. I want to be ready for whatever exciting opportunity comes my way next.”

Indeed, his training today is not what it once was. First, he prioritizes balance over bodybuilding. “When I was younger, bodybuilding was kind of a staple and the first thing people learned about,” he recalls. “Today I trained my chest and triceps, Tuesday was my back day, and Wednesday was my leg day.

“I don’t like that kind of training because it’s too rigorous and too specific,” he continued. “I think I’ll do something more practical than formal movements. I think it’s completely unrealistic to limit yourself to building your pecs someday.”

That being said, his older brother Zach definitely fits the typical “gym buddy” profile. Efron said: “Zac is definitely a gym guy. I’ve always been a little bit taller and slimmer, and I think Zac can go to the gym and outlast me in almost every category. But let’s play sports and I’ll have an advantage.”

With his brother always in the theater, Efron put himself in the field. “I’ve always loved the cardio aspect and training for sports. I’ve been able to learn most of the new sports I’ve tried. If you try hard enough and give yourself enough time, you can learn almost anything. And I was hoping dance would be the same,” he confessed. “But don’t get me wrong, my brother is a better dancer than me.”

Still, Efron could be active on another stage in the future.
