More than 200 inmates attacked the guards and escaped when they saw the trembling removed from the cells as a safety measure.

More than 200 inmates fled Pakistan’s prisons after moving out of the cell for safety amid the trembling of the earthquake, officials said.

Police said Tuesday that dozens of prisoners who escaped from Karachi’s prisons were quickly recaptured, but at least 130 are understood to be unexplained. Authorities added that the attack is still ongoing to arrest people.

Of the 216 prisoners who fled Marill prison in the middle of the night, 78 have been recaptured, police officer Kasif Abbasi told the Associated Press. He emphasized that none of the prisoners escaped were convicted fighters.

Escapes are not common from Pakistani prisons that have stepped up security measures since the attack on prisons by the Pakistani Taliban in the town of Della Ismail Khan, which has released hundreds of prisoners.

One prisoner was killed, three security officials were injured in a shootout, and developed in a bid to detain one of the fugitives.

Sindh’s Home Minister, Zia ul Hassan Ranjar, said the escape had occurred. Upon leaving his phone, a group of inmates attacked the guards, seized weapons and fired fire.

According to Reuters, Ranjar said in a comment published live on a local TV news channel that Ranjar is one of the biggest in Pakistan history.
