The mask bid has allowed for years to raise tensions with Openai CEO Sam Altman about the startup’s future.

The consortium led by Elon Musk has provided $97.4 billion to buy a nonprofit that controls Openai, months after billionaires sued to block the transition to for-profit companies. I’ve said that.

The mask bid revealed on Monday was able to raise years of tension with Openai CEO Sam Altman about the future of the startup, which is at the heart of the boom in generating AI technology.

Altman immediately posted to X: “Thank you, but I’ll buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if necessary.”

The two have already been involved in an ongoing lawsuit. Musk criticized the $500 million Openai-led project called Stargate, which was announced in a big fanfare at the White House shortly after President Donald Trump took office, suggesting that officials lacked funding for the project. .

“It’s time for Openai to return to its open source, safety-focused power,” Musk said in a press release. “We’ll make sure it happens.”

Openai, Musk, Musk’s lawyer Marc Toberoff, and Openai’s supporter Microsoft, did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

This bid is supported by mask AI company Xai. This could fuse with Openai after the transaction, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported a mask offer earlier on Monday.

Even if it doesn’t mean antitrust, a deal of this size would require Musk and his consortium to raise huge amounts of money.

Valued at $157 billion in its latest funding round in October, Openai solidified its position as one of the most valuable private companies in the world. SoftBank Group is in talks to lead a funding round of up to $400 billion in Openai, with a $300 million valuation, including new funds, Reuters reported in January.

Musk co-founded Openry with Altman in 2015, but left before the company took off. He founded competing AI startup Xai in 2023.

Openai is currently attempting to move nonprofits into for-profit organizations. It says this is necessary to ensure the capital needed to develop the best artificial intelligence models.

Musk’s lawsuit against Openai and Altman originally approached him to fund a nonprofit organization focused on developing AI that benefits humanity, but now he’s making money. They say they are focused.
