EVs dominate the index of most American-made cars, but it’s not just Tesla

Tesla vehicles featured four top spots in the 2025 American-made Index (AMI). This is an annual list calculated by CARS.COM, which ranks eligible vehicles built and purchased in the United States.

Tesla’s domination at AMI is nothing new. The US automaker, which assembles four lightweight passenger cars in Texas and California, has landed in the top ten since starting to participate in the annual rankings five years ago. This year, the Model 3 was ranked as the most “made in America” vehicle sold in the United States.

But this is what may surprise consumers – and even those who follow the industry: EVS took six of the top 10 spots in the American-made index. In addition to Tesla, the KIA EV6 and Volkswagen ID.4 took 6th and 10th place respectively.

The annual index ranks vehicles for the current model year using five key factors, including the location of the final gathering, the US and Canada portion, the country of origin of all engines available, the country of origin of all available transmissions, and the US manufacturing workforce. According to CARS.COM, approximately 400 vehicles have been researched since the 2025 model year, and 99 vehicles have arrived at the 2025 American-made index. Both heavy-duty vehicles like the Tesla Cyber Truck and the Libian R1 are made in the US, but are not qualified.

The Kia EV6, assembled at the Georgia plant, West Point, a Korean automaker, won another eyebrow-raising award. The Kia EV6 contains 80% of the US and Canada parts, making it the highest percentage of vehicles sold in the US today.

Cars.com noted that only eight EVs qualify for the 2024 index. This year, 11 battery-electric vehicles are AMIs, including the Ford F-150 Lightning, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV9 SUV. Another 19 is a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Statistics show that “the driving electrification in the industry was not just lip service,” according to cars.com.

The question is whether tariffs, higher prices, and the end of the federal EV tax credit (which the Senate proposed in its tax and budget bill) will derail this electric track.
