Love Island USA may still be a show about dating. But as Season 8 progressed, viewers became less concerned about the romantic pairings than usual. According to online chatter, they’re investing in something that has long been controversial on the show: friendship.
We are not talking about major changes in power relations. The Peacock reality series, which airs every night except Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, still has all the usual elements: bombshells, recouplings, public votes, and the villa drama that turns a single conversation into a full-blown Internet investigation.
And while Season 8’s Casa Amor episode gave the couple a chance to flirt mid-season, it still revolved around couple drama. Cast member KC returns from Casa Amor with Tierra, aka “Titi,” leaving her former partner Anya single. Anya broke down in tears in front of the group and told KC that he had chosen her every time, but he never chose her back. Mr. KC’s response was full of attitude.
But do fans remember the showdown part? How Melanie, a fellow islander, came to Aniya’s side as she shed tears.
Melanie helped Anya away from the fire pit and tried to pull her out of the spiral. Melanie reminded Anya that KC didn’t fit into the life she wanted.
At the end, Melanie told Anya that even if they didn’t find love in the villa, they found each other.

Fans also pointed out other heartwarming episodes showing female friendship. After the Heart Rate Challenge, the women had a rare night and morning to themselves, and viewers noticed how soft Villa felt without the men taking center stage.
Fans’ favorite moments include the ladies cooking grilled cheese together, practicing dancing, and pumping each other up with confidence-boosting speeches.
And after the June 30 episode where Trinity and Bryce became boyfriend and girlfriend, the internet couldn’t help but fall in love with the other girls’ reactions when Trinity shared the good news.

These are the moments that stay with you even after you’ve been dumped. Former cast member Beatrice, who was kicked off the island on June 12, said that despite her previous drama with Melanie (the scene included Melanie’s iconic walk-off line, “Give me a 10”), she considered the conflict to be part of a real friendship.
“When you’re friends, you have small discussions and arguments,” Beatrice told Variety. “But at the end of the day, we’re going to crush it.”
She also added that because the show is edited into an hour, viewers miss out on a lot of off-screen conversations and deep connections. Beatrice explained that, contrary to appearances, Trinity and Keida were her best friends in the villa. She was sadder about leaving them than she was about leaving the show itself.
In other words, female friendship feels like a more believable love story this season. Admittedly, it’s not much of a debate, considering that KC brushes off Anya’s hurt with another hurtful reference to a “good family” that Anya is particularly interested in (Anya’s father is former NBA player Donnell Harvey), that Corbin describes the girls’ team at the casa as a “girls college,” that the girls team back at the villa is “high school,” and that Cynthia continues to test Melanie’s patience.
What about bromance?
It’s not just the girls who are getting along. Season 8 also featured a bromance that was popular on social media.
When the Paradise Cove twist in episode 2 saw Keida, Zack, and Bryce trapped in separate cabins for 24 hours, fans focused as much on Zack and Bryce as they did on the intended love triangle.
Viewers have been treated to weeks’ worth of edits between the pair, noting that the real chemistry in Paradise Cove may not have been between Keida and the guys, but between the boys.

Since then, their relationship, be it romantic or platonic, has developed into one of the most talked about stories in the villa.
“Friendship Island” is not a new term. The villa has been part of the Love Island USA fandom since season six. At this time, Jana was saved from elimination by her friends, despite not having the strongest romantic connections in the villa at the time. “This is not ‘Island of Friendship,’ it’s ‘Island of Love,'” fellow Islander Aaron insisted at the time.
Since then, fans have used “Friendship Island” in both criticism and praise. Sometimes this phrase is used, as Aaron used it, to argue that the Islanders are playing it too safe because they don’t want to step on their friends’ toes.
However, it is also sometimes used to celebrate the friendships that make the show successful even when the couple is not. And this season, friendship seems to be the highlight of each episode.

Women still compete within the structure of dating shows. Overcoming jealousy, rejection, and public opinion is not easy. The scene that most resonates with the audience is when the islanders honestly talk about the difficulties of the show. They remind each other, and us, that Love Island (just like life) isn’t always about finding the right partner.
It may actually be about the friends we make along the way.
