Fernborough International has appointed Green Circle Solutions (GCS) to measure the carbon footprint of its flagship event, the Fernborough International Air Show.
Sarah Lindsay, an operational experience and assistant director of sustainability with 16 years of working at Fernborough International, shares insights into the partnership process.
“Many potential suppliers didn’t know the size of our event. Some provided rough estimates, but wanted a more detailed, evidence-based approach,” Lindsay said.
The GCS’ first mission was to calculate the emissions generated by airshows and visitor travel. Using the GCS Visitor Travel Carbon calculator, Fernborough International was able to directly target audiences for the first time.
The tool was integrated into the registration process, and participants were invited to receive a personalized carbon footprint report in exchange for sharing travel data.
According to Lindsay, GCS’ involvement with major suppliers such as Catering and Transport has saved both time and resources.
Air Show Display is also factored as the operational team provides fuel data, making sure all display aircraft are equipped with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplied from Tag-owned Farnborough Airport.
Additionally, Fernborough International’s Destination Zero campaign aims to achieve net zero emissions by embedding sustainability in all areas of the business and making more sustainable choices for teams, partners and clients.
The final GCS report is currently being analyzed to identify further ways to reduce emissions ahead of the 2026 event.
Fernborough International is committed to reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050, but the team is looking for ways to accelerate that timeline.
