FBI investigating malware hidden in games hosted on Steam

The FBI announced Friday that it is investigating a hacker suspected of releasing several malware-laced video games on the popular PC game store Steam.

In an announcement looking for possible infected victims, the FBI listed BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova as games suspected of being developed by the same cybercriminals over the past two years and hosted on the Steam store but loaded with malware.

This isn’t the first time hackers have been able to host malware on the Valve-owned gaming marketplace. Last year, hackers released several games on Steam that contained malware. The game worked, albeit a little rudimentary. In fact, the developer’s goal was to act as a kind of Trojan horse and trick gamers into installing malware on their computers. Steam removed the game, but an unknown number of people were infected in the meantime.

Do you have more information about these malware-laden video games? From any non-work device or network, you can safely contact Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai on Signal (+1 917 257 1382), Telegram and Keybase @lorenzofb, or email. You can also contact TechCrunch via SecureDrop.

Valve and the FBI did not respond to requests for comment.
