The far-right leader has posted a counter-argument on social media, accusing the Brazilian government of being an “authoritarian regime.”

Former Brazilian president, Jia Bolsonaro, has dismissed what he calls a “blushy accusation” against him after the election loss in 2022, after being charged with taking office in an attempted coup.

In a lengthy post on social media platform X on Wednesday, Bolsonaro said it was the result of a criminal charge against him and an “authoritarian regime” in which 33 other people need to “manufacture internal enemies.”

“The secret tricks that accused Democratic opposition leaders of plotting a coup are nothing new,” Bolsonaro wrote.

He compared his indictments to his efforts in Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua. This said in all countries led by left-wing governments, leaders accused opposition members of “coup plotters.”

“It’s like that all over the world,” Bolsonaro added. “The playbooks are well known. They make vague accusations, worry about democracy and sovereignty, persecute opponents, silence opposition and concentrate their strength.”

Bolsonaro’s comments were the day after Brazilian authorities accused the former president of devising a multifaceted scheme to maintain power following the loss of current President Louise Inacio Lula da Silva’s elections in 2022. Come to.

Among other accusations, prosecutors said Bolsonaro and dozens of supporters had conspiracy to poison the former president’s enemy Lula and shoot dead Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. I criticized him.

Other defendants in the charges include the former minister and former Naby chief.

“Risk for conduct that is harmful to the democratic order falls under the authoritarian project of power, and is a criminal organization led by Jer Messias Bolsonaro,” the accusation document states.

Former Army captain Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, could be arrested before his trial unless de Moraes, who oversees the case, considers him a flight risk. low.

The indictment was marked first when Brazilian authorities charged a crime against a right-wing populist leader.

It represents a new blow to the 69-year-olds who were planning an increasingly unlikely political comeback. He is currently prohibited from holding public office until 2030.

This week’s bill follows a two-year Brazilian Federal Police investigation that ended in November.

In January 2023, we investigated Bolsonaro’s suspected role in leading the campaign, which reached its peak with thousands of supporters rioting in the country’s capital, Brasilia.

During the riots, Bolsonaro supporters clashed with police, breaking into buildings for the presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court, looting and causing damage.

Observers compared the event to an attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, when supporters of President Donald Trump tried to disrupt the certification of his 2020 defeat.

Bolsonaro repeatedly denied his involvement in the riots, pointing to him being in Florida at the time.

Responding to a journalist’s question about the charges on Wednesday, Lula said everyone is entitled to a presumption of innocence.

“If they prove they did not attempt a coup and they prove they didn’t kill the president, the vice president, the president of the highest electoral court, they’ll be free,” Lula said. . “When a judge is brought to trial, if they reach the conclusion that they are guilty, they must pay for the crime they committed.”
