destructionBroken,

Since 2018, the ICC has been investigating lawsuits against Duterte over the anti-drug war that killed thousands of people while he was in office.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine President’s Office has reported the arrest of the country’s former president, Rodrigo Duterte, after receiving a request from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Duterte was detained on Tuesday when he arrived from Hong Kong at Manila Airport, according to the Philippine government, who was requested through Interpol.

Duterte faces allegations of “crime against humanity” during his brutal anti-drug drive while in office.

According to the arrest warrant, he was president from 2016 to 2022, and was president from 2016 to 2022, but took suspects in a “legal due process,” resulting in the deaths of thousands of people, including children.

Defending his actions in a report of his possible arrest, Duterte had previously said that he “did everything for the people of the Philippines.”

“If it’s really the fate of my life, it’s okay, I’ll accept it. There’s nothing I can do about it. If I was arrested, if I was in jail, then that was the case,” he said.

Police records show that more than 7,000 presidents have been killed in official operations after Duterte’s six-year presidency.

However, previously published reports show different numbers, pointing to what some critics claim to be inconsistencies in record keeping.

Human rights defenders said the number of killings exceeded 30,000, including those killed by unknown suspects, some of which were later revealed to be police officers.

In a statement Tuesday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) described Duterte’s arrest as “an important step in accountability in the Philippines.”

“His arrest could bring the victims and their families closer to justice and send a clear message that no one has surpassed the law. The Marcos government should quickly abandon him to the ICC,” said Bryony Lau, HRW’s Deputy Asian Director-General.

This is a broken news story. I’ll bring you right away.
