Google is getting into the smart glasses game (again).

At Google I/O on Tuesday, the company announced new partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to produce a new line of AI-powered glasses. The devices are built to pair with Android and iOS devices and were designed in collaboration with Samsung, the company said. The company says it will be released later this year.

Google is calling the new devices “audio glasses” in that users can issue verbal commands to these devices and have them do things through the company’s ecosystem of apps and services, including Gemini.

Users simply speak to the glasses (a demo shared on Tuesday featured a Google employee ordering coffee online simply by speaking to the glasses), and the device responds once synced.

Google has dabbled with smart glasses many times over the years. The company infamously launched Google Glass a few years ago, which ultimately helped give rise to the derogatory term “glass hole.”

However, the smart glasses field has changed a bit since then. Recently, large companies, especially Meta, and a small number of startups and small companies have invested in this space.
