Google announced Thursday that it will begin rolling out Gemini to Google-powered cars, marking a significant upgrade from the current Google Assistant. The move signals Google’s commitment to bringing more advanced conversational AI to the driving experience.

The announcement largely follows news from General Motors, which revealed yesterday that it will ship approximately 4 million Geminis starting with the 2022 model year, spanning brands such as Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. However, today’s announcement does not name any specific automaker, suggesting that Gemini will not be limited to GM vehicles.

This rollout begins in the US with English language support and will expand availability in the coming months. In particular, Gemini is compatible not only with new vehicles but also with compatible existing vehicles through software updates.

The first car with Google built into it was launched in 2020. According to Google, this new Gemini update will allow drivers to interact with their vehicles in a more natural and conversational way.

Soon, drivers will be able to speak more freely to complete tasks, explore ideas, and find information. For example, drivers can say they’d like to stop for lunch at a highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating along the route. Gemini uses data from Google Maps to pull relevant suggestions and can address follow-up questions like parking availability and menu options, including food preferences.

Gemini can also perform tasks such as turning on the heating, giving directions, recommending music, retrieving vehicle information, and summarizing incoming messages, allowing drivers to respond hands-free.

Additionally, Gemini Live, currently in beta, allows for freer real-time conversations. Drivers can enable the feature by tapping a button on the interface or saying “Hey Google, let’s talk,” allowing them to brainstorm, learn, and have general discussions while on the road.

Drivers who have a compatible vehicle and are signed in to their Google Account will see the option to upgrade. Once enabled, you can access Gemini through voice commands, on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls.

Google said it plans to expand support for Gemini to additional languages and regions. Future updates will include deeper integration with services like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.
