Have you got this year’s Covid vaccine?

Every fall, updated versions of the Covid-19 vaccine come out at about the same time as the annual flu shot. And like influenza shots, these updated covid vaccines are being formulated to protect against virus strains that people are likely to encounter in the coming months, as opposed to strains that had been ramping the previous year.

However, this year, the hunt for the updated Covid vaccine may be confusing.

In August, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued guidance restricting groups that recommend getting updated shots. Only people over the age of 65 or at least 6 months have one underlying health condition that increases the risk of severe community infection. People outside of these two groups may have to consult with their doctor to get a prescription before seeking a shot of the community. Still, it may not be covered by their insurance. The situation is confusing and the photos vary depending on the condition.

Typically, vaccine advisors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also weigh it down with their own Covid vaccine recommendations. However, it is unclear how it will control, as a prominent enemy against the vaccine has recently been added to its committee.

Some states have already invaded through federal guidance. For example, Minnesota and New York issued executive orders to expand access to resident shots, while the New Jersey Health Department issued directives with the same intention. Oregon, Washington, California and Hawaii have yet to issue details on the 2025-2026 Covidshot, but have formed an alliance that provides unified vaccine recommendations to residents.

Have you tried to get the Covid vaccine this year? If so, how was it? Please tell us in the poll below. If you run into certain issues while acquiring this year’s Covid vaccine, let us know what’s in the comments. Stay tuned for the article as Live Science will publish additional guidance on the 2025-2026 Covid vaccine next week.
