The Houthi rebels have insisted another attack on the US naval vessel, calling it “retaliation” for our strike against Yemen.
A spokesman for Houthi said on Monday that the fighter jets had launched 18 missiles and drones on “aircraft airline USS Harry Truman and its accompanying warships.” The US military said it continues to target the group overnight.
This was the second strike against the US Navy claimed by a group that has been in line with Iran for the past 24 hours amid a sudden surge in hostility. After Houthis said last week it would resume targeting Israel-related transport in the Red Sea due to Israel’s continued lockdown in Gaza, the US launched a series of massive attacks on Yemen over the weekend, killing many people and injuring more people.
In a statement posted to Telegram, a Houthi spokesman said the attack was “retaliation for the continued American invasion on our country.”
The US is not responding to billed strikes. However, US Central Command posted a video to X saying “continue the Iran-backed operation against Houthi terrorists.”
A Houthi-backed Saba news agency reported two new air raids early on Monday around the port city of Hodeidah, about 230 km (143 miles) from the capital Sanaa.
Citing local government, Sabah reported that US troops had struck on Sunday at a cancer facility built in Sada city, causing “wide-reaching destruction.”
Houtis, which controls many of the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest countries, has maintained a campaign to target busy sea routes off the Yemen coast as Israel attacked Gaza in the last 18 months.
The attacks affected world trade, forcing massive maritime traffic between Asia and Europe away from the Suez Canal, and were forced to make much longer journeys around Africa.
The group halted drones and missile attacks targeting ships with Israeli links when Gaza was declared in January.
However, the Yemeni group last week said Israel would “resuming a ban on the passage of all Israeli ships” in the Red Sea due to a new blockade of the Palestinian enclave.
On Saturday, President Donald Trump ordered the US troops to attack the Hoosis.
According to Reuters, the attack killed at least 53 people and injured more women. Most of the 40 attacks targeted the province of Saada, managed by Houthi, north of Sanaa.
Oil prices are trading higher on news of the Red Sea attack. Brent Futures – a global international benchmark – rose 41 cents or 0.6% on Monday to $70.99 a barrel.
