US President Donald Trump has announced that he has lifted long-standing sanctions on Syria.

The Syrians describe it as a turning point – “the second joy since Bashar al-Assad’s collapse.”

President Donald Trump has announced that all sanctions in Syria will be lifted as a way to help the country rebuild after years of civil war.

The UN estimates that half of Syria’s population is displaced, with nearly 75% in need of humanitarian assistance.

At current growth rates, it says it will take at least half a century to reach pre-war economic levels.

President Ahmed Alshara is calling on the United States to invest in the US oil and gas sector.

But can he take advantage of the removal of US restrictions and transform a fragmented and devastated country?

And what about the vulnerable security situation in Syria?
