In pursuit of re-election, President Daniel Novore focuses on Ecuador’s crime wave | Election news

Novore continues to shake the weather with debates over the limits of his authority throughout the end of his latest campaign.

The Ecuadorian constitution requires civil servants to take leave to run for reelection.

However, Novore instead signed two enforcement orders to avoid transferring power to Vice President Veronica Abbado. Just this week, the Ecuadorian Constitutional Court declared both unconstitutional.

After the verdict, the powerful coalition of indigenous rights, the Ecuadorian coalition of indigenous nationalities (Conaie), denounced Novoa for treating the president like a “private hacienda.”

“Authoritarian manipulation cannot hide the truth. Novoa’s government is full of irregularities, abuse and light empt against democracy,” Konai wrote in a statement.

“We have never trusted this government,” Konaye’s representative president, Yasakama, told Al Jazeera. “As a woman, his treatment of the Vice President hurt me.”

Yasakama is a representative of Konaie, an indigenous organization located at Konaie headquarters in Quito, Ecuador. Date: February 5th, 2025.

Still, Novoa campaigned for a second period on the basis of declaring a war against Ecuador’s “old politics.”

In the ad, Noboa stands in a white t-shirt against a purple background next to the slogan “One Round.” This is an appeal to voters to make Sunday’s victory very large.

It has a pointed, informal look and is designed to appeal to the younger generations of Ecuador. Garcia Nice explained that younger voters especially like Novoa. Some even carry cardboard cutouts from leaders.

In countries where the average voting age is 28 and 16-year-old teenagers are eligible to vote, their demographics can provide a great advantage in polls.

But Novoa’s charisma as a young leader would only take him with him so far, Hurtado warned.

If he succeeds in earning a full four-year term this year, he no longer enjoys the bounty of doubt that comes with being a relative rookie in politics.

“If he doesn’t solve the big challenges of the country, his popularity will decline,” says Hurtado.
