The eruption by the Lewotvirakiraki Volcanic volcano in Indonesia, located in the southeastern part of Flores, expelled more than 8 km (5 miles), disrupted the flight, and raised emergency warnings to the highest level of residents and tourists.
Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre on Friday warned local people and visitors against activity within a 7-8km (4.4-5 miles) radius in the southwest and northeastern sectors of the eruption.
“The ash pillars were observed in thickness strength from grey to black,” the Indonesian Volcanology Agency said in a statement about the eruption that began at 10:56 pm local time on Thursday night (14:56 GMT).
There were no immediate reports of damage to nearby villages, but the agency warned residents about possible volcanic mudflows caused by heavy rain. The long eruption has prompted the country’s geological institution to raise the volcano alert level to the highest four-stage system.

A spokesman for the Bali airport told Reuters the gateway is still in operation despite the delays in seven international flights and domestic routes.
The eruption of Lewotobi laki-laki was followed by a tsunami warning from the Japanese Meteorological Agency, but it did not occur.
The volcano erupted last November, killing at least 10 people and driving away thousands.
