Iran threatens ‘Stargate’ AI data center

Iran has warned of further attacks on data centers across the Middle East in response to continued threats and airstrikes from the United States.

The Iranian military said if the United States follows through on its threat to attack civilian infrastructure, Iran will retaliate with its own attacks on American energy and technology infrastructure in the region, according to a video released by Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari over the weekend and widely shared on Sunday.

A video released by Iran shows an image of a globe, zooms in on Stargate’s data center in the United Arab Emirates, and displays the message, “Nothing hidden by Google is hidden from our eyes.”

Stargate is a $500 billion joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle to build AI data centers announced in January 2025. The initiative initially struggled to get off the ground amid funding troubles and alleged costs related to tariffs, as the company sought to expand internationally with new data centers.

The latest threat comes after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to attack Iranian civilian infrastructure, including power plants and desalination facilities, by the end of Tuesday unless Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global seaway that has disrupted global supply chain traffic since the war began in February.

As a result of the war, several data centers in the region have already been hit by missiles.

Iranian missiles hit an Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center in Bahrain and an Oracle data center in Dubai. Last week, Iran threatened technology companies including Nvidia and Apple by name.
