John Thrasher, former Florida president and state president, John Thrasher, died at the age of 81.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Former Florida State University president and longtime state legislator John Thrasher passed away Friday. He was 81 years old.

Thrasher, who chaired the Florida family and served as a member of the Florida Senate, passed away in Orlando on Friday morning, his family said in a statement. He was fighting cancer Social Media Posts Last month, he was from his former lobbying company.

“John had a remarkable life, and he made a huge difference in the lives of many people in our state,” Florida government said. Ron Desantis He said in a statement.

Slasher, a Republican, was a member of the Florida family from 1992 to 2000 and was a speaker for the past two years. After leaving the elected office, he proceeded to co-founding Southern Group Lobbying company. He was elected to the Florida Senate in 2009 and remained there until 2014.

“Integrity, perseverance and strength have urged John to succeed at all levels of public service and private industry,” Florida Sen. Ben Albritton said in a statement. “His life was rooted in public service, patriotism, love for law, and dedication to education.”

Thrasher served as president of Florida State University from 2014 to 2021. He received a business degree from the school in 1965 and joined the US military, where he won an Army acclaimed medal and two bronze stars for his service in Vietnam. After military service, Thrasher returned to Florida in 1972 to earn a law degree.

“John’s love for Florida State was really exciting,” said Richard McCullough, current FSU president, in a statement. “As alumni, legislator, trustee and president, he has dedicated his life to enhancing FSU’s national reputation and helping the university reach new heights in its student success, academic excellence and research.”

Private burial is planned at Orange Park near Jacksonville. A celebration of his life is scheduled for August 19th in Tallahassee’s Florida state.
