Participants in King County’s “Washington Health Initiative (HTH) are “home first” approaches to help residents without residents, and there have been significant improvements in their health, Guy Oron reports true change.

People in the program, who have worked with nearly 2,000 residents between 2021 and 2024, visited emergency rooms 17% less, and after living in a home, they were 33% less at hospitals a year later. “King County HTH Initiative Manager Jelani Jackson said the data shows that alleviating people from the constant stress and trauma of homelessness directly leads to them becoming healthier.”

As Oron explains, “Unlike traditional affordable housing, HTH providers operate what is called permanent supportive housing, providing residents with additional wraparound social services and case management.” The program allows people to stay in supportive housing indefinitely and receive the services they need. HTH also focuses on eliminating King County housing inequities by serving vulnerable groups, including black and Native American clients.
