Libian elects Cohere CEO to board with latest signal EV makers are bullish with AI

According to regulatory submissions, Aidan Gomez, co-founder and CEO of Generative AI Startup Cohere, has joined the board of EV maker Rivian. The appointment is the latest indication that Libian will commit to applying AI to its own ventures, while establishing himself as a software leader and even a provider within the automotive industry.

Libian increased the committee size and elected Gomez.

Gomez has a long career as a data scientist and AI expert. He launched Cohere with co-founders Nick Frossst and Ivan Chan in 2019, focusing on training AI Foundation models for businesses. Generating AI Startups sell services to companies such as Oracle and Concepts.

Before starting Cohere, Gomez was a Google Brain researcher, Google’s Deep Learning Division, led by Nobel Award winner Geoffrey Hinton. Gomez is known for “Everything you need to be careful about.” This is a 2017 technical paper that laid the foundation for many of today’s most capable generation AI models.

Gomez’s skill set is especially useful for Rivian as EV Maker navigates a new $5.8 billion joint venture to develop the software. Under the joint venture, Libian is expected to share its electrical architecture expertise with the Volkswagen Group, which includes many brands, and license existing intellectual property rights to the joint venture.

The joint venture could potentially sell its technology to other companies in the future.

Libian has been working as an AI assistant for EVS since 2023, Wassym Bensador, Libian’s chief software officer, told TechCrunch in an interview in March. AI work that is particularly found in the orchestration layer or framework of AI assistants is outside the joint venture with VW.

Gomez’s expertise as an AI and data scientist is clearly appealing to Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe.
“His thinking and expertise will support Libian in integrating new cutting edge technologies into products, services and manufacturing,” noted in the statement.
