Rights groups and UN agencies have documented systemic abuse of refugees, including torture, rape and torture of migrants and Libyan refugees.

Libyan authorities have discovered nearly 50 bodies from two large tombs in the country’s southeastern desert in the latest tragedy involving people trying to reach Europe through the country’s North African country.

The Security Bureau said in a statement Sunday that the mass graves found on a farm in the southeastern city of Kuhura on Friday contain 19 bodies. The body was taken for autopsy.

Mohamed Al-Fadeil, head of Kufra’s security chamber, said the second mass grave with at least 30 bodies was also found in the city after authorities raided the immigration detention centre.

He added that nearly 70 people have been buried on the site, and authorities are still searching the area, according to their Survivor account.

Al Abreen, a charity supporting immigrants and refugees in eastern and southern Libya, said some of the people found in the large tombs were shot dead before they were buried.

Large graves containing the bodies of asylum seekers have been previously discovered in Libya, the main transport for immigrants from Africa and the Middle East.

Last year, authorities excavated the bodies of at least 65 migrants in the Shuairif area south of the capital Tripoli.

Traffickers have benefited from more than a decade of instability, smuggling migrants and refugees across borders with six countries, including Chad, Niger, Sudan, Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia.

Rights groups and UN agencies have documented systematic abuse of asylum seekers in Libya for years, including forced labor, assault, rape and torture. Abuse often involves efforts to force money from families before traffickers’ boats are allowed to leave Libya.

People who were intercepted and returned to Libya are being detained in government-run detention centres that suffer abuse such as torture, rape and torture, according to rights groups and UN experts.

The country was in chaos after a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 that defeated and killed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Oil-rich nations have been ruled for the past decade by rival governments in the eastern and western Libya. Fighter jets and foreign governments.
