Lucid Motors is set to deploy software updates on July 30th. This allows for hands-free highway driving, a major step forward in the company’s advanced driver assistance system.
The rollout puts Lucid Motors on a short list of companies that have enabled hands-free driving in the US. Ford has a system called BlueCruise, General Motors has a Super Cruise, Mercedes-Benz has a Drive Pilot, but it’s not so widely available. In vehicles equipped with the right conditions and in-cabin cameras, Tesla’s fully self-driving (supervisor) can also be used hands-free.
Lucid said the hands-free update has been appearing on Air Sedans for now, with the update rolling out to owners of the New Gravity SUV scheduled for later this year. (The company barely started shipping Gravity SUVs anyway. This week, Cox Automotive reported that only five were offered in the second quarter.) The system is only available to customers equipped with a $2,500 “Dream Drive Pro” package that includes a “comprehensive suite of 32 sensors” including Lidar, Radar, Cameras and Ultrasonics.
The company refused to say how many customers have purchased the Dream Drive Pro package so far. Lucid has delivered approximately 20,000 cars since 2021.
Drivers should always be ready to take over, looking at the road ahead, like competing driver assistance systems. Lucid says this will be done with an infrared camera-based system in the car, located at the top of the steering column. You can also use the hands-free system on “compatible” pre-mapped divided highways.
Update: Added information about pre-mapped highways and system infrared cameras.
