Houston Mayor John Whitmire has defeated another proposed bike lane in an apparent war with cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, reports Dominique Anthony Walsh of public media in Houston.
As Walsh explains, “The 1.6-mile West Alabama Street reconstruction project spread between Shepherd Drive and Spur 527, from Upper Kirby to Montrose to Midtown. However, Whitmire rejected the proposed bike lane, which could reduce the width of the car lane and require the removal of old, grown, shaded trees.
“The new design concept follows the mayor’s guidance mobility principles by maintaining a general purpose mobility lane, providing pedestrian safety with a 5-6-foot wide side and a safe pedestrian intersection,” Whitmire’s planning advisor Marlene Gafrik said in a statement Thursday.
