Meta yesterday signed a deal with solar developer Silicon Ranch to develop a $100 million 100 megawatt solar farm in South Carolina.
The new renewable installation will become the planned AI data center for Power Meta in the state, and is expected to cost $800 million. Both the data center and solar plants are expected to begin operation in 2027.
According to the company, most equipment in solar farms is made in the US.
The New Deal is the 18th contract signed between Meta Ranch and Silicon Ranch. The renewable developer said the deal helped drive more than $2.5 billion in investments.
Meta has added more than 2 gigawatts of solar power generation capacity this year alone. In June, he signed a deal with Invenergy, a developer of several Ohio projects, and in May he said he was working with AES to build 650 megawatts of solar in Kansas and Texas. Meta is also working with Engie and Zelestra in Texas to develop an additional solar capacity of 800 megawatts.
Like many hyperschools, Meta taps renewable energy like solar for two main reasons. One is that it helps companies stick to their net-zero carbon emission pledge. But perhaps more importantly, solar is cheap, can be deployed quickly, and can reduce the time, which is a critical bottleneck for new data centers.
