On Wednesday, the meta platform announced on Facebook that it will add support for PassKeys, the next-generation password standard.

“PassKeys is a new way to verify your identity and log in to your account that is easier and more secure than traditional passwords,” Tech Giant said in a post.

PassKeys support is expected to be available on “SOON” on Android and iOS mobile devices. This feature will also be on the messenger platform for the next few months.

The company also said PassKeys can be used to automatically fill payment information when making purchases using Meta Pay.

Cybersecurity

Meta previously deployed PassKeys support for Android WhatsApp in October 2023, and a few months later, it was deployed on iOS in April 2024. There are no plans to bring PassKeys to Instagram yet.

Backed by the FIDO Alliance, PassKeys is a passwordless authentication solution that allows you to securely sign in to online services using biometrics or device lock pincodes.

“PassKeys resists speculation and theft from malicious websites and fraudulent links, making it a security upgrade over traditional passwords and one-time SMS codes that are effective against phishing and password spreading attacks,” Meta said.

Last month, Microsoft created a default sign-in method for new consumer accounts in PassKeys. Recently, Apple has previewed future changes to the password app that allow you to import and export passkeys between participating qualification management manager apps on iOS, iPados, MacOS and Visionos 26.
