Meta AI hits 1 billion active users every month. Subscriptions and monetization then says Zuckerberg

According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s AI assistant shared the update every month on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger at the company’s annual shareholders meeting on Wednesday.

The news comes just a month after Meta strengthens AI ambitions with the launch of a standalone meta AI app and competes directly with Openai’s ChatGpt.

Meta AI currently has 1 billion users

Zuckerberg said the focus this year will be on making meta AI feel more personal as voice conversations, entertainment features and smarter customizations are prioritized. “The focus this year is to deepen experience and make meta AI a major individual AI with a focus on personalization, voice conversation and entertainment,” he told shareholders.

Since Meta launched the standalone app in April, assistants have picked up Steam.

What’s next? Zuckerberg said Meta is not in a hurry to monetize his assistants yet, but that’s on the roadmap. Once the product matures, the company plans to explore ways to make money, including inserting sponsor recommendations and providing premium features behind the paywall. “There’s an opportunity to insert paid recommendations,” he said.

Earlier this year, CNBC reported that Meta deployed its dedicated Meta AI app in Q2 and was about to test the paid tier, similar to what Openai did with ChatGpt Plus.

Meta first introduced chatbots in September 2023, building them directly on apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and more. The assistant can respond to prompts, create images, and process casual queries without the need for users to leave the app.

In April, Meta went a step further by using Meta AI to swap search bars for these apps. The move shows the company’s intention to make AI feel like a core experience across the platform.

“It may seem a bit funny that we don’t think a billion active monthly is massive for us, but that’s where we are,” Zuckerberg said.

Although AI controlled the headlines, the shareholders’ meeting also included 14 votes related to Meta’s business. Nine of them come from shareholders and topics ranging from child safety and emissions to suggestions on how to deal with hate speech, including anti-Semitism.

One proposal from JLENS, who belongs to the Prevention Prevention League, called for the release of an annual report on harmful content in light of the policy shift in January to ease content mitigation

Early voting results suggest that most proposals not supported by Meta’s board are unlikely to be passed. This includes pushing to terminate the dual-class shared structure that gives Zuckerberg control stock. Proposals supported by the board, such as board member approvals and equity incentive plans, are expected to be passed, CNBC reports.

Meta said the final vote count will be posted to the investor website and in the SEC within four business days.

Meta is betting that not only will it incorporate AI into its products, but its assistants can become a go-to option for a billion people. And with the mix having a new standalone app, the company is clearly all in.
