Microsoft is making OpenAI’s new free GPT model, GPT-OSS-20B, available to Windows 11 users via Windows AI Foundry. It is Tech Giant’s platform that lets users tap on AI features, APIs and popular open source models on their computers.
In a blog post, the company stated that the GPT‑ OSS-20B is “tool-savvy and lightweight,” and that “it’s optimized for agent tasks like running code and using tools, allowing it to run efficiently on a variety of devices and is supported immediately.
Openai’s GPT-OSS-20B, released on Tuesday, can run on consumer PCs and laptops with at least 16GB of VRAM. According to Openai, the model is trained using high metric augmentation learning, which is excellent at powering AI agents and helps you call tools such as web search and Python code execution.
However, the model is text only. This means that you cannot process or generate images or audio like other models in the company.
Additionally, this model has many hallucination habits. The GPT-OSS-20B hallucinated in response to 53% of questions regarding PersonQA, Openai’s internal benchmark for measuring the accuracy of model knowledge about people.
Microsoft says that the company is no longer named, but it brings the model to MacOS, not just other devices. Microsoft makes both GPT-OSS-20B and later model GPT-OSS-120B available via the hosted Azure AI Foundry platform.
Two new models are also available on Amazon’s AWS.
