Namibian new president announces free university education starting in 2026

Windhook, Namibia (AP) – New President of Namibia Netum Bonan Dindaithova Her government announced Thursday that it will introduce free higher education at state and technical universities starting next year.

Nandi Nudaitowa sworn into as Namibia’s first female leader Last month, she made a presentation while delivering her national speech to Congress.

“We are pleased to announce that higher education will be 100% subsidized by the government from the next grade, starting in 2026,” she said.

Namibia already offers free education in public elementary and high schools, but parents usually have to pay for school uniforms, stationery, books and hostel fees.

The new policy removes tuition and registration fees at universities and universities. For many years, it has been called for by the governments of around 3 million countries in South Africa to subsidize education at all levels.

“We’ve heard your cry,” Nandi Nudaitwa said. She said the policy aims to improve opportunities for young people amid the issue of youth unemployment and poverty. According to official figures, around 2.1 million Namibians are under the age of 35.

Two of Namibia’s seven universities are run by the province and offer free education under policy. All seven vocational training centres are run by the government and will no longer charge tuition fees.
