Netflix has introduced a new way to experience subtitles that eliminate the need to read audio cues such as “door slam” and “phone rings.”
Netflix’s new dialog-only subtitles announced Thursday can be enabled by going to “Go to Audio,” then “Subtitles.” Users will see options labeled “English” instead of “English (CC)” indicating that only spoken language is included.
This option complements existing closed captions (CCs) that caters to the hearing community of the deaf and hard. This includes both important audio cues such as audio effects and music indicators.
However, dialog-only subtitles offer a streamlined alternative, displaying only dialogs without any additional context.
This new option is a response to the growing popularity of subtitles. According to Netflix, nearly half of the US viewing time is spent with subtitles turned on.
Dialog-only subtitles will be available for the new season of “You” and will soon be featured in other new Netflix original titles in all languages offered by the streaming service.
