Grindr is making customers uncomfortable, and other dating apps are starting to take notice. Since the announcement of the “AI era” and the introduction of astronomically priced premium tiers, Grindr’s competitors have gone all out to give people what they want: connectivity.

Squirt, the cruising site that dates back to 1999’s BG (pre-Grindr), released its first iOS app (SQ Dating) in April. And now we’re adding new features to encourage you to download the app and check out the site. This includes a revamped “video chat” experience and a “new guy” grid.

According to a press release shared with Mashable, Video Chat has been reimagined to provide a “smoother, faster, and more reliable one-on-one experience.” Easily move between the web and mobile apps. You can also switch between the front and back cameras and receive call notifications on both platforms (no matter which page you’re on).

“The return of video chat gives our members a more immediate way to flirt, tease, check compatibility and decide what happens next,” Andrew Nolan, head of dating operations at Squirt parent company Pink Triangle Press, said in a statement. “Whether you’re browsing a website or using an app, we want the experience to feel direct, easy, and passionate.”

To make it even easier to see who is new to the app, the company has launched a “New Guys” grid. This is basically a grid of guys who have joined in the last 30 days or have been online “recently” and have explicitly flagged that they want to meet right now. This is helpful if you’re tired of seeing the same local faces over and over again.

Squirt also says it plans to add an integrated “Maps” feature later this summer to provide another way to connect to nearby profiles (yes, that sounds like a page out of Sniffy’s book). It’s in Dates in the app and Cruising List on desktop, where you can check in to locations and see nearby activities.
