North Korean leaders oversaw a test of their country’s latest military innovations, including the use of artificial intelligence.
North Korean leader Kim Jong State personally oversaw his country’s testing of new AI-equipped suicides and reconnaissance drones, calling for unmanned aircraft and artificial intelligence to prioritize their military modernization plans.
The state-run South Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Thursday that Kim oversaw the tests of “various types of reconnaissance and suicide drones” created by the North Korean unmanned aerial technology complex.
The new North Korean drones “can track and monitor the activities of various strategic targets and enemy forces on the ground,” while the attack drones are “used for various tactical attack missions,” KCNA said both drone systems are equipped with “new artificial intelligence.”
Kim agreed to expand the production capacity of “unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence” and emphasized the importance of North Korea creating long-term plans to promote the “rapid development” of “intelligent drones,” a “modern war trend.”
Photos from the tests taken Tuesday and Wednesday were said to show that the attack drone would successfully attack ground targets, including military vehicles.
According to photos released by KCNA, Kim was photographed walking near a newly developed unmanned aerial reconnaissance aircraft that appears to be larger than a fighter, and was seen boarding an early warning and control (AEW) aircraft in the air.
The photograph was marked for the first time when such an aircraft was announced by the North. It was equipped with a radar dome on the fuselage, similar to the Boeing-manufactured Eye of Peace run by the South Korean Air Force.
North Korea’s efforts to create early warning aircraft had previously been reported by analysts who discovered Pyongyang using commercial satellite imagery.
The London-based Institute for International Strategic Studies (IISS) said in a report last year that AEW aircraft will help to enhance North Korea’s existing land radar systems, but one aircraft is not enough, but not enough.
During his visit to the test site, Kim was explained not only to the newly developed electronic jamming and attack systems by the country’s electronic warfare group, but also the capabilities of intelligence report collection, KCNA said.
The South Korean government and analysts have repeatedly warned about the potential transfer of sensitive Russian military technology to North Korea to support Russia’s war with Ukraine, Kim provides thousands of North Korean troops and weapons.
Seoul’s troops said Thursday that North Korea has provided Russia with an additional 3,000 troops and missiles and other ammunition so far this year.
“It is estimated that an additional 3,000 troops were sent between January and February as a reinforcement,” said South Korea’s Co-Chief of Staff (JCS) who is believed to have been killed or injured of the first 11,000 North Korean soldiers sent to Russia in 2024.
“In addition to human resources, North Korea continues to supply missiles, artillery equipment and ammunition,” according to a JCS report.
“So far, North Korea has been rated as offering a large number of short-range ballistic missiles. [SRBMs]”It’s about 220 units of a 170mm self-propelled gun and multiple 240mm rocket launchers.”
The JCS also warned that “these numbers could increase depending on the situation on the battlefield.”
