Streetsblog NYC’s Sophia Lebowitz is receiving advice from candidates after Zoran Mamdani’s victory in the mayoral primary in New York City.
Recognizing Mamdani’s traffic and pedestrian-friendly proposals (including free bus dishes and other bike lanes), Lebowitz says “there are areas where his platform can be made even stronger from a habitable road perspective, so that young leaders look to their previous rivals.”
For one, Lebowitz is proposing Director Brad Lander’s proposal to expand the fair fare program. Lander has a more comprehensive plan surrounding micromobility and delivery vehicles, calling for data sharing between the app company’s licensing system and the city.
As for housing, State Sen. Zellnor Myrie’s reconstruction NYC plan proposes restructuring New York City Housing Authority, adding nearly 100,000 new units of public housing, rezoning several industrial areas, and reassigning shelter funds to permanent housing.
How did Mamdani’s victory collapse along the neighborhood lines? See this map from the city.
