Security forces launched a Manhunt after gunmen fired on tourists and killed 26 people in the worst attacks in Kashmir, controlled by India, in about a quarter century.

All those killed in the attack on Tuesday were listed as Indian residents, except for one man from Nepal.

A statement issued in the name of the Front of Resistance (TRF), considered to be a derivative of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The statement linked thousands of residence permits handing over the attacks to Indian citizens, allowing them to settle in Kashmir. Al Jazeera could not independently confirm the credibility of the statement.

Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Omar Abdullah have said in recent years that the attacks are “a lot bigger than what we were directed at civilians.”

The bodies of the murdered people were transported to Srinagar by a fleet of ambulances on Wednesday, when military helicopters soared overhead and flanked by the forested mountain flanks for signs of attackers.

“This attack on our visitors is hatred,” Abdullah said in a statement.

The murder led to global condemnation.

US President Donald Trump has called on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “provide full support to India to bring the perpetrators of this heinous attack to justice.”

China has provided “honest sympathy” to the families of those who were killed in trouble with neighbors in a difficult area.

Authorities in recent years have promoted mountainous areas as winter ski holiday destinations and have been promoted to escape the swelling summer heat elsewhere in India.

Last year, around 3.5 million tourists visited Kashmir. This is primarily domestic visitors.
