The film’s genesis traces back to Chad Nelson, a creative specialist at OpenAI, and Nik Kleverov, co-founder of Native Foreign. Their initial collaboration in 2023 resulted in a short film, also titled Critterz, created using OpenAI’s then-emerging DALL-E image generation tool. The success of this short led to Nelson’s recruitment by OpenAI, with a mandate to champion the use of their technologies among artists and creators.
Critterz will tell the story of a group of forest creatures embarking on an adventure after their village is invaded. While the core narrative and visual concepts will be AI-generated, the production team is implementing a hybrid approach to navigate the complex world of intellectual property.
A Budget-Friendly, Time-Saving Revolution
Reports suggest a budget of approximately $30 million, with a projected completion time of just nine months – a stark contrast to the typical three-year timeline for conventional animated features.
