Openai is switching things up. In a post shared on X, CEO Sam Altman announced that the company will release two new models, the O3 and O4-Mini in the coming weeks. The GPT-5 is expected in a few months.
“Plan change: I’ll probably release O3 and O4-mini in a few weeks and run GPT-5 in a few months,” Altman shared with X.
The move also shows a change in strategy as Openai focuses on using GPT-5. Although the O3 and O4-MINI were not the original roadmap, the company chose to ship first while work on the GPT-5 continues behind the scenes.
Why does it change?
According to Altman, the decision wasn’t just about fixing bugs and grinding edges. This was to make the GPT-5 significantly stronger than planned at the beginning.
“There are many reasons for this, but the most exciting thing is that it can make the GPT-5 much better than we originally thought,” he said.
GPT-4 pushes AI-generating languages that approach human-level flow ency, and could raise the ceiling even further if GPT-5 already exceeds its early benchmarks internally.
Altman also acknowledged some friction in the deployment process.
“I felt it was more difficult than I thought it would be going to be a smooth integration of everything,” he said.
It’s not just about releasing smarter models. It’s about making sure it works well on a large scale. Openai expects a wave of demand when the GPT-5 is launched, and Altman highlighted the need to get the infrastructure right.
“We expect unprecedented demand and want to make sure we are capable.”
What happened to the O3 and O4-Mini?
Although most attention has been paid to the GPT-5, the arrival of O3 and O4-Mini suggests that Openai has not been mitigated. The company has not yet shared specifications or performance metrics, but based on naming, these models could be intermediate versions or target upgrades.
Launching them now will help GPT-5 maintain momentum and user interest as it takes more time to develop. Openai also tries to stay competitive with rising challengers like Elon Musk’s Xai, who have been moving quickly in the generated AI race.
Big bet on GPT-5
Openai doesn’t officially detail what the GPT-5 does better, but Altman’s comments suggest that it’s going to surpass the internal benchmarks. The speculation incorporates multimodal features, including improved context handling, reduced hallucinations, and smarter tools for businesses and research users.
GPT-5 can push the industry again, especially if Openai avoids the burden of servers that plagued previous releases.
The act of balancing Openai
This revised timeline will provide the company with rooms to roll out new things now, preparing for a more ambitious launch later. By releasing O3 and O4-MINI ahead of GPT-5, OpenAI can engage users, test their infrastructure and make sure they are ready to meet what is in demand.
The company knows what happens when you’re not ready. When ChatGpt first went viral, it highlighted Openai’s system. This time’s goal: Don’t repeat that mistake.
So for now, the plan is clear. You will soon be launching O3 and O4-mini to build your GPT-5 predictions.
