Openai is starting a new way for developers to build applications inside ChatGPT. Starting Monday, CHATGPT users will have access to interactive applications from companies such as Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva. Openai also launches previews of the Apps SDK, a developer toolkit for building these apps.
Openai made an announcement at its annual developer conference, December 2025.
“We hope that ChatGpt is a great way for people to make progress, be more productive, more original, learn faster and do whatever they are trying to do in life,” said CEO Sam Altman. “[Apps inside of ChatGPT] Enables new, interactive, adaptive, personalized apps that you can chat with. ”
The new system is OpenAI’s latest attempt to build an app ecosystem centered around the flagship AI product ChatGpt. The launch follows Openai’s previous attempts to enable developers to build interactive applications, such as the GPT Store. Unlike products that were on another App Store, Monday’s launch brings apps directly into ChatGPT responses, allowing users to invoke third-party tools in their daily conversations. This aims to improve the delivery of apps that developers build, providing a richer experience for ChatGpt users.
By entering the names of different apps in ChatGPT, users can draw content from different services. For example, the user could say, “figma, turn this sketch into a viable diagram.” Users say, “Coursera, could you tell me anything about machine learning?”
A demo of Zillow’s application allows users to encourage ChatGpt in natural language and to search for apartments in their area within a certain price range. ChatGpt then raises an interactive map showing options, allowing users to talk to ChatGpt to learn more about each one.

It also displays related apps when ChatGPT may be useful to users. If someone asks for a playlist for this weekend’s party, ChatGpt can call the Spotify app in a conversation. In the future, Openai says apps like Doordash, Instacart, Uber and Alltrails will also be available on ChatGpt.

According to Openai, the new system is built using Model Context Protocol (MCP), and developers can connect data sources to AI systems. The ChatGpt app can also trigger actions and render a fully interactive UI with chatbot responses. Certain apps can display videos in ChatGPT. This is pinned to the top of the web page and can be changed based on user requests.
If a user is already subscribed to a product, you can log in directly to your account with ChatGpt to access certain features. Altman also says Openai will support how it monetizes its apps inside future ChatGpt, including the instant checkout feature recently launched on ChatGpt.
The key question about ChatGpt’s apps is privacy and the amount of data that third-party developers can access. Openai says developers must “collect only the minimum required data and be transparent about permissions.” However, it is unclear whether the developer will only have access to the entire conversation with CHATGPT, a few past messages, or prompts that summoned the app.
It is also unclear how ChatGpt will choose between competitors such as Doordash and Instacart. While you can imagine how companies pay to surface in ChatGPT responses, Openai says it plans to prioritize the user experience more than anything else.
