New affordable housing developments in Southeast DC use innovative geothermal HVAC systems to provide more efficient heating and cooling.

According to the opinion of Matthias Poustian and Glen Hall of Greater Washington, “The geothermal HVAC system, part of a $2.5 million pilot project funded by the DC Public Service Commission (PSC), uses a closed loop of water-filled pipes to provide extremely efficient heating in the winter and is sold by the Publical Public System in the Summer (PSC), a closed loop of water-filled pipes to provide highly efficient heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.”

Geothermal systems can make the grid more resilient by reducing electricity demand, in addition to reducing costs for residents. “According to a study in Transformation Strategy Consulting, municipalities across the United States pursue this technology to reduce household energy costs for residents. This is a strategy that can be replicated here in DC.”

According to the author, “We will bring clean energy systems to DC that can integrate these clean energy systems into both new and existing neighborhoods, allowing residents to access affordable energy without the safety risks associated with methane gas.”
