President Trump postpones executive order on AI security, says language ‘may have been a deterrent’

President Donald Trump has delayed signing an executive order that would allow the government to evaluate AI models before releasing them.

President Trump insisted he was not satisfied with the text of the executive order, telling reporters at the White House that he “didn’t like certain aspects of the order.” “We lead China, we lead all countries, and we don’t want to do anything that gets in the way of that leadership.”

The unofficial reason: Some reports say there is a shortage of high-tech CEOs who can arrive in Washington, D.C., on short notice. What is signing an executive order without taking a photo?

The anticipated executive order would have tasked the Office of the National Cyber Director and other agencies with developing processes to assess the security of AI models before they are released. This is in part in response to concerns raised by the release of Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Cyber, both of which have the potential to quickly discover and exploit security vulnerabilities.

According to CNN, one of the key issues in the EO’s language is the proposed requirement that AI companies share advanced models with the government 14 to 90 days before launch.

President Trump said he was concerned that the Oval Office’s language today “may have created a roadblock.”
