President Donald Trump said in a social media post Saturday that Netflix will “pay the consequences” if it does not fire Susan Rice, who has served on the company’s board since 2018.
Trump’s comments came after Rice, a former U.N. ambassador who served in diplomatic and advisory roles in the Obama and Biden administrations, appeared on the Stay Tuned with Preet podcast hosted by Preet Bhalla and predicted that companies that “knee-jerk” to Trump would be “held accountable” when Democrats return to power.
“If these companies think that once Democrats are back in power, they’re going to play by the old rules; […] “Oh, don’t worry about it,” he says. We’re going to forgive all the people you fired, all the policies and principles you’ve violated, all the laws you’ve circumvented.’I think they’re thinking something else,” Rice said.
In response, President Trump posted on his social network Truth Social: “Netflix should immediately fire the racist and Trump-deranged Susan Rice, or they’ll have to pay the price. She has no talent, no skill. She’s a pure political hack! Her power is gone and will never come back. How much is she getting paid and for what???”
Trump’s post also included a screenshot of a post by far-right activist Laura Loomer, who criticized Rice’s comments and claimed that the deal between Netflix and the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground, would result in a “Netflix-Warner Bros. merger that would result in a streaming exclusive, giving the Obamas a significant stake.”
Trump’s post did not mention specific implications, but Netflix’s major acquisition of Warner Bros. would require approval from federal regulators. The streaming company’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos reportedly spoke with Trump before the deal was announced, and Trump said afterwards that Netflix was “a great company.” […] But this has a large market share, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens. ”
Mr. Trump made a similar post to Microsoft last fall, calling for the firing of its president of international affairs, Lisa Monaco, who was also the target of Mr. Loomer’s criticism. Monaco is still at Microsoft.
