After the election authorities’ decision, around 300 Georgek’s supporters gathered outside the election department and shouted, “Freedom!”

Romanian central election officials have banned far-right pro-Lucia candidate Karin Georgek from competing in the country’s May presidential election rerun, sparking protests from Georgek’s supporters.

The decision, released on Sunday, is not yet legally binding and is expected to be appealed by Wednesday by the Romanian Constitutional Court.

The far-right candidate unexpectedly won the first round of the presidential election on November 24th.

Shortly before the spill, the Constitutional Court cancelled the first round due to irregularities in campaign funding fixed in Russian interference, and the election was rescheduled on May 4th.

After the election authorities’ decision, around 300 Georgek’s supporters gathered outside the elections department by shouting “Freedom!” And they tried to force their way through the security cordon.

Georgeuk denounced the election officials’ move against X as “a direct blow to the center of democracy around the world.”

He currently conducts major polls for around 40% of the vote.

Russian interference allegations

Georgescu submitted his candidacy for the May vote on Friday despite doubting he would be allowed to run.

Romania’s highest courts overturned the vote two days before the second round of voting in December.

Georgescu had denounced the abolition as a “formal coup.” Tens of thousands of people have protested the decision in recent weeks.

Members of President Donald Trump’s administration are called Romania’s cancelled elections, and are examples of European governments that curb freedom of speech and political adversaries.

The tech billionaire and Trump adviser Elon Musk called the election officials’ decision “crazy” on his social media platform X.

Georgescu is currently undergoing six criminal investigations, including membership in fascist organizations and communicating misinformation regarding campaign funding.

He denied all wrongdoing.
