The key developments on the 1,101th day of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine are:

This is the situation for Saturday, March 1st:

Fineting

One person was killed and another was injured after a drone attack caused a fire on private property and a business facility at Odesa’s Black Sea Port.

Ukrainian air defenses destroyed 103 of the 154 drones launched by Russia on the overnight strike, Keeff’s Air Force said. The other 51 drones were “localized” and probably as a result of electronic clogging.

The Russian drone attacked medical facilities and other targets in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, and was injured between five and seven people, officials said. Kharkiv Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said civilian areas in three central districts of the city were attacked, forcing at least 50 people to evacuate medical facilities that were attacked by the strike. Russian infantry is raiding the Ukrainian border from Russia’s Kursk region, near an area controlled by Ukrainian forces, Kiev said. For now, he added that the attack has been contained.

Politics and diplomacy

President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy were left to a screaming match on Friday, when Trump threatened Zelensky schools and cried out, “You either make a deal or we’re out.” After a meeting with Trump in Washington, D.C., world leaders overwhelmingly expressed their support for Zelensky, and the two ended abruptly as they engaged in a fierce exchange over the Russian war with Kiev. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Zelensky to apologise for his clash with Trump, calling him “for wasting time on a meeting that was like it was over.” Zelensky said he could repair relations with the US after accusing Trump of screaming at him at the White House and refusing to achieve peace with Russia. Trump said Zelensky “overestimated his hand” amid the clash of an extraordinary oval office, accusing visitors of his desire to drag him out of the conflict with Russia. Trump added that he hopes for a “ceasefire now.” Russia has sent a new ambassador, Alexander Dacheev, to Washington, to announce it is the latest indication of melting between the two countries as they try to repair the war in Ukraine and explore war. The International Monetary Fund and Ukraine have signed a loan program review that unlocks roughly $400 million with a much-needed fund more than three years after the Russian invasion. As British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer met with European leaders on Sunday, preparations are underway to “advance” Ukraine and safety actions. Zelenskyy is one of those people expected to attend meetings.
