These are important events on the 1,170th day of the Russian Ukrainian War.

It’s where things stand on Friday, May 9th.

Fineting

Ukraine says Russia has violated a three-day ceasefire. This was called by Russian leader Vladimir Putin to coincide with a celebration commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sibikha described the ceasefire as a “fare.” “The Russian army continues to attack across the frontline,” Sybiha wrote in his X account. “From midnight until noon, Russia committed 734 ceasefire violations and 63 assault operations, of which 23 are still ongoing,” he said. Ukrainian forces reported 154 clashes, 15 airstrikes and one missile attack in the first 24 hours of the Russian ceasefire. The Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine had made 488 attacks on Russian targets, and attempted to attack Kursk twice separately across the border.

Politics and diplomacy

US President Donald Trump once again called for Russia for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in a post on true society. Trump’s post followed a call with Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky. Trump and Zelensky’s relationship appears to have improved since the disastrous meeting earlier this year. Zelenskyy described the call with the US president as “good.” Ukrainian lawmakers voted unanimously to ratify the mineral trade with the United States, hoping to secure military aid to stop future Russian invasions. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin met in Moscow this week. There, the two leaders said that war in Ukraine can only be resolved by addressing the “root cause” or Ukrainian desire to participate in NATO. Moscow believes that the White House is beginning to understand Russia’s position on war in Ukraine, according to long-time Russian diplomats. Yuri Ushakov, former ambassador to Washington, told Russian media that he “understands that we understand what we are trying to achieve as a result of this situation.”

economy

The UK is being used to sanction up to 100 oil tankers suspected of members of the Russian “Shadow Fleet” and avoid international sanctions. British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said the UK will “do everything to destroy everything with our power.” [Russia’s] Operation of the Shadow Fleet. Starmer said Russia’s “starving oil revenue war machinery and need to protect the undersea infrastructure that it relies on for daily life.”
