These are important events on the 1,187th day of the Russian Ukrainian War.

It’s where things stand on Monday, May 26th.

Fineting

Ukrainian officials say the death toll from the biggest Russian air attack on Ukraine has risen from 12 to 13, causing at least 60 people to be injured. The victims included three children, ages 8, 12 and 17, in the northwest of Zhytomyr. The Ukrainian air force added that Russia was able to fire 298 drones and 69 missiles in the overnight attack, reducing 266 drones and 45 missiles. The Russian Ministry of Defense said its forces controlled the village of Romanibka in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine. It also said that Russia’s air defense intercepted 110 Ukrainian drones overnight on Sunday, including 13 in Moscow and the TVER region. Russia and Ukraine completed three-day exchanges of 1,000 prisoners each, in the largest such exchange since the war began three years ago.

Politics and diplomacy

US President Donald Trump called him “crazy” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin following the attack, warning that an attempt to acquire Ukraine in full “lead to Russia’s downfall.” Trump also raised the possibility of more punitive measures against Russia, and he said “absolutely” considering the rise in US sanctions on the country. Ukrainian President Voldy Mie Zelensky urged international leaders to increase pressure on Russia, saying, “The silence of America, the silence of others around the world only encourages Putin.” He also said additional sanctions “certainly help.” Trump also said in a social media post that the Ukrainian leader “has not benefited his country by speaking like him. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadefav told public broadcaster ARD that Western sanctions should be added to Russia’s latest wave of attacks on Ukraine. He said the weight of more sanctions in Moscow would bring Putin to the negotiation table. Kaha Karas, the top diplomat of the European Union, called for “the strongest international pressure” on Russia to stop the war. “It’s devastating to see children plagued and murdered among innocent victims,” she told X at a special mission to Keith Kellogg in Ukraine.

Military assistance

The Netherlands say it will send the last one of its promised F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine on Monday.
