Spotify takes on Google’s NotebookLM with new app

One common feature companies are building in the AI era is connecting services such as email, calendars, documents, and notes to create daily summaries in text or audio format. Spotify has also given in to this temptation and is releasing a new standalone desktop app for this purpose called Studio by Spotify Labs.

Today, the company released a feature that allows users to explore topics by creating podcasts about them. Spotify is also adding personal context to this podcast generator. And because in 2026, businesses won’t be able to refrain from adding agents to their apps, the new Studio app includes an agent that can browse the web, capture personal information, and create personalized podcasts.

For example, the tool can create daily briefings and podcasts based on email and schedule. Users can also generate a podcast by making a multi-step request such as “Create a daily audio briefing for your road trip through Italy. Describe your day using your calendar and reservations. Recommend memorable dinner spots near where you’re going to stay. Finish with a recommendation for a podcast you’d like to take on a road trip.”

All of these AI-generated podcasts are stored in your Spotify library for personal use and synced across devices. These are not open to the public.

The audio company warned that this is an early preview of the app and that the AI could make mistakes and output consistently unreliable content.

The company will release the app as a research preview in more than 20 markets. The app is available to some users over the age of 18.

The tool competes with Google’s NotebookLM, which began popularizing podcast generation based on selected source material several years ago. And in true Google fashion, the company also released another feature that creates daily podcasts based on your Discover feed. Since then, the format of creating podcasts to explore topics and receive daily explanations has been adopted by companies like Adobe and Celebrities, and apps like Hero and Huxe.

The release of Spotify’s desktop app follows the recent debut of a command-line tool for users of coding tools like Claude Code and Codex to create and save personal podcasts to their Spotify library. With the new Studio app and personal podcasts feature, you don’t have to be a programmer to use this service.

This launch is another example of how Spotify wants to be involved in audio in general. Spotify could offer more integrations for creating podcasts in the future using its desktop app. Additionally, you can use the new app to capture system audio and take granola-style notes. This is speculative, but we’ve seen startups like Rewind and Cluely become meeting recorders, so this could be another area of interest for the company in the future.
